How to monetize your expertise beyond brand deals.
Treat brand deals as one income line, not the business. Pick the expertise people already ask you about. Build public proof of it. Package it into something you own, like a product, a service or a talk, and sell it to an audience you can reach directly, such as an email list. How much any of it earns depends on you, your audience and your market.
Sponsorships are a great income line, but the brand controls them: their budgets, their timing, their brief. Creators who rely on them alone are exposed whenever marketing budgets tighten.
This framework is about income you control. It's an editorial guide to the order of operations, not a get-rich plan, and it makes no promises about income.
Decision criteria.
- GOOD FIT IF
- People regularly ask you how you do something, and you can explain it from start to finish.
- GOOD FIT IF
- You can reach some of your audience directly, through email or a community, not only through a platform feed.
- NOT YET IF
- You can't yet name a specific problem you solve for a specific person. Start there.
- BE REALISTIC
- Owned offers take time to build and sell. They complement brand deals before they replace them.
Step by step.
- STEP 01
Name the expertise people already pay attention to
List the questions you get asked repeatedly and the results you've produced for yourself or others. The overlap between what you know deeply and what people ask about is the offer.
- STEP 02
Build authority in public
Teach the topic consistently through video, posts, articles or a newsletter. Authority comes from a visible track record of useful answers, and it takes patience.
- STEP 03
Own the relationship
Move interested people somewhere you control, usually an email list. Platform reach can change overnight. A list you own is how you'll launch anything you build.
- STEP 04
Package one product
Start with a single, specific offer: a short course, a template pack or a guide. Validate it with your audience before building more. See our course creator stack for platform options.
- STEP 05
Add a service tier
Coaching, consulting or done-with-you work can sit above a product for people who want direct help. Price it on scope and value, and define clearly what's included.
- STEP 06
Speak on the topic
Workshops, webinars and talks build authority and can become paid work over time. Record them so each talk also becomes content.
- STEP 07
Review the mix every quarter
Look at which lines are growing, which take too much time, and how much you still depend on any single sponsor or platform. Adjust deliberately rather than chasing every opportunity.
What this won't do.
- There's no guaranteed income from any of these models. Results vary widely by niche, audience size, trust and execution.
- Products and services take real time to support. Budget for customer support and updates, not just launch.
- Platform fees, terms and features change. Check each platform's current terms before committing.
- If you take paid work, check your local tax and legal requirements.
Carlos's 2024 video covers his approach to authority, products and speaking. This guide turns it into an ordered framework, with an owned audience as the base.

- Should I stop doing brand deals?
- Not necessarily. The point is to stop depending on them. Brand deals can sit alongside owned income, which gives you more freedom to turn down sponsorships that don't fit.
- What should I build first?
- Usually an email list and one specific, small product. A list gives you a way to launch, and a small product shows whether people will pay before you build more.
