Best tools for course creators.

One platform to teach on, one place to host video, one list to sell to, one checkout that clears.

WHO THIS IS FOR

This guide is for people selling what they know: a cohort, a self-paced course, a workshop or a template-plus-teaching bundle. It covers four jobs and only four, because that is what a course business actually needs — somewhere to teach, somewhere to host the video, a list to sell to, and a checkout that takes money reliably in every country your students live in.

The first decision to get right is whether you want an all-in-one platform or a set of specialist tools. All-in-one means one login, one bill and no integrations to debug, at the price of accepting whatever quality each individual module happens to be — usually excellent hosting, adequate email, and marketing tools that are fine until you want something specific. Specialists mean a better tool for each job and a stack you have to wire together. Neither is wrong. What is wrong is buying an all-in-one for the marketing features and then never using them, which is the most common overspend in this category.

The second is fees. Some platforms charge a monthly fee, some take a percentage of every sale, and some do both. On a $500 course selling twenty copies a month, the difference between a flat plan and a revenue share can be several hundred dollars — which is why we list what each tool actually takes rather than just the sticker price. Every price and tier here is checked against the vendor before publication, and dated on the pricing tables.

The third is student experience, which nobody shops for and everybody feels. Reliable video playback, obvious progress tracking, working mobile access and a checkout that does not fail on a foreign card are what keep refund requests low. We built courses on these platforms, enrolled test students, took live payments including a failed-card retry, and hosted lessons behind domain restrictions to see what broke. Where a cheaper or simpler option is genuinely sufficient, we say so.

COURSE PLATFORM

Where the teaching actually happens

Choose on the shape of your business, not the feature list. If the course is the product, buy a good LMS. If the course is one part of a funnel with emails, upsells and a membership, an all-in-one earns its price.

BEST FOR CREATORS WHOSE PRODUCT IS THE COURSE

Thinkific

8.4 / 10 · $$ · Course creators who want a solid LMS without an all-in-one marketing suite

Thinkific is the platform we recommend most often, because it does the teaching part properly and does not charge you for a marketing suite you may not use. The builder is chaptered and fast once you learn its structure, video uploads are handled for you, and quizzes, downloads and completion certificates are first-party rather than plugins. The student side is the quiet strength: playback is reliable, progress is obvious, and the mobile experience does not fall apart — which matters more for refund rates than any landing page. Paid plans take no cut of your revenue, so at volume it is meaningfully cheaper than percentage-based platforms. The free plan is genuinely usable for a first course. Where it loses is marketing: email is basic, funnels are limited, and deep design customisation hits a wall without code. Pair it with an email tool you like and it is the best value in the category at 8.4.

BEST ALL-IN-ONE

Kajabi

7.9 / 10 · $$$ · Course creators and coaches

Kajabi is the platform to buy when you want one login for the entire business: course hosting, landing pages, email sequences, funnels, a community, payments and analytics, all in one place and all talking to each other. That integration is the product. When a student buys, the email sequence fires, the upsell page exists, the membership access is granted, and nothing needs a Zapier step you have to debug at 11pm. For creators running launches with sequences and tripwires, it removes a real category of work. The price is the obvious catch — it is the most expensive option here by a distance, and the entry tier already costs more than most specialists' top tier. Each individual module is good rather than best-in-class, and the design system takes some fighting. Buy it if you will use the marketing half; otherwise you are paying for software you will not open.

BEST FOR A FAST, FAMILIAR LAUNCH

Teachable

7.4 / 10 · $$ · Creators launching structured paid courses

Teachable is the well-trodden path: get a multi-module course published, priced and selling in a day, with a student experience nobody complains about. Course creation is straightforward, coupons and payment plans are built in, and it handles the awkward administrative parts — tax handling on many sales, student receipts, affiliate payouts — with less setup than assembling it yourself. We published a course and processed real enrolments without touching documentation. The friction is money: transaction fees apply on lower tiers, so a course that sells well is effectively taxed until you upgrade, and the higher plans are priced against Kajabi rather than Thinkific. Design customisation is limited and the email tools are thin. Choose it when speed to first sale matters most, and run the numbers again once monthly revenue makes the fee structure the biggest line item.

BEST STUDENT EXPERIENCE

LearnWorlds

8.6 / 10 · $$ · Course creators who sell a premium, cohort-quality learning experience

LearnWorlds is the platform to choose when the teaching itself is your differentiator rather than the funnel around it. Its interactive video is the only course-platform feature we tested that changed how students behaved: you attach questions, links, downloads and branching choices to moments in a lesson, so watching becomes answering, and completion stops being a vanity metric. Assessments go deeper than the quizzes elsewhere here, certificates and SCORM support make it the easiest platform to sell into a company, and the site builder produces pages that look designed rather than templated. Subscriptions, bundles, coupons and affiliate management are all first-party, so a serious offer does not need plugins. Two honest caveats. The Starter plan charges a $5 fee on every course sale, which quietly costs more than upgrading once you sell steadily, so price Pro Trainer into your plan from the start. And the build takes longer than Teachable or Thinkific — budget a weekend, not an afternoon. If the course is premium and the experience has to justify the price, it is the strongest platform we have tested, at 8.6.

BEST FOR MOBILE-FIRST, LOW-TICKET TEACHING

Stan

7.7 / 10 · $ · Solo creators selling small digital products

Stan is not a traditional LMS and that is the point. It is a link-in-bio storefront that sells digital products, mini-courses, workshops and one-to-one calls, built for creators whose audience arrives from a phone on Instagram or TikTok. Checkout is fast, the pages look native on mobile, and you can be selling a $29 workshop within an hour of deciding to. For low-ticket, high-volume teaching attached to a social audience, it converts better than a course platform's landing page because it never asks the buyer to change context. What it will not do is host a serious curriculum: no real quizzing, no completion tracking to speak of, limited structure for long courses, and a subscription plus per-sale economics you should check against your price point. Use it as the front door and the small-product engine, not as the home for a flagship course.

VIDEO HOSTING & PRODUCTION

The lessons themselves

Most course platforms host video adequately. You need a dedicated host when branding, privacy or embedding lessons on your own site matter — and a fast editor so recording lessons does not become the bottleneck.

BEST DEDICATED VIDEO HOST

Vimeo

7.9 / 10 · $$ · Course creators and studios who need private, unbranded video hosting

Vimeo earns a place in a course stack for one reason: control. The player carries your colours, hides recommendations, and can be locked to specific domains, so paid lessons do not leak into a public feed or end with a competitor's thumbnail. In testing, the same embed behaved identically inside a course platform and on a plain landing page, and playback held up on a deliberately poor connection. The replace-file feature is the underrated one — re-cut a lesson and existing embeds and links keep working, which saves hours on any course you maintain over years. The friction is pricing: storage caps, seat counts and live features are split across tiers in a way that nudges you upward faster than expected, and the free tier is a demo. If your platform's built-in hosting is fine and branding does not matter, skip it. If you sell premium video, pay for the player.

FASTEST WAY TO RECORD AND EDIT LESSONS

Descript

9.2 / 10 · $$ · Podcasters who hate the timeline

Descript is the reason a course can go from outline to recorded in a week rather than a month. Record your screen and camera, then edit the transcript: delete a fumbled sentence in the text and it disappears from the video, and the filler-word and pause removal passes make a first take sound like a rehearsed one. For course lessons — which are mostly talking and screen-sharing — this is the largest time saving available anywhere in this stack. Studio Sound fixes an imperfect room, and captions generate automatically, which matters because a meaningful share of students watch with sound off or need them. It is not for cinematic production or heavy motion graphics, and long 4K projects can feel heavy. But for the specific job of producing forty clean teaching videos on a deadline, nothing else comes close; it rates 9.2 with us.

BEST FOR SLIDES, WORKBOOKS AND COURSE CREATIVE

Canva

8.5 / 10 · $ · Anyone who isn't a designer (and many who are)

Canva covers the paper half of a course: slide decks that look consistent, workbooks and worksheets exported as tidy PDFs, module thumbnails, certificate designs and the sales-page graphics. Brand kits lock your fonts and colours so lesson forty looks like lesson one, and templates mean a new worksheet is a five-minute job rather than a design project. For most course creators this replaces both a slide tool and a document designer. Its limits are the usual ones — template-driven design looks template-driven, and precise typographic control is not there — which matters for a brand-defining sales page more than for a workbook. If your course visuals need to be distinctive, build the master templates in Figma and let Canva handle the weekly filling-in.

EMAIL MARKETING

Courses are sold to lists, not to strangers

Cold traffic rarely buys a course on first contact. The email tool's job is to warm an audience, run the launch sequence, and behave differently for people who bought than for people who did not.

BEST EMAIL TOOL FOR SELLING COURSES

Kit

8.4 / 10 · $$ · Creators selling digital products

Kit is built for exactly this business. Visual automations let you branch on behaviour — clicked the sales page but did not buy, bought module one, went cold for sixty days — and tag people accordingly, which is the machinery behind every launch sequence that feels personal. Landing pages and forms are good enough to run a lead magnet without a separate site tool, and its creator network adds recommendation-driven list growth you do not have to pay for. Commerce features mean you can even sell a small product directly to the list. The trade-offs: email design is deliberately plain, and pricing scales with subscriber count, which stings if a large list is not yet buying. If you only ever send one broadcast a week it is more machine than you need, but for a course creator running launches it is the tool whose depth you will actually use.

BEST FOR COMPLEX, BEHAVIOUR-DRIVEN FUNNELS

ActiveCampaign

8.2 / 10 · $$$ · Creators and small businesses running complex multi-channel funnels

ActiveCampaign is the option for course businesses that have outgrown simple sequences: multi-branch automations, lead scoring, conditional content inside emails, and a CRM attached so you can treat a high-ticket enquiry like a sales conversation instead of a newsletter subscriber. If you sell a $2,000 cohort programme with application calls, this is the tool that tracks the pipeline. Reporting is far deeper than the creator-focused tools and the deliverability record is strong. The cost is complexity and money: the interface assumes marketing-operations literacy, building automations properly takes real time, and pricing climbs with both contacts and features. Most course creators do not need it and should buy Kit instead. If your funnel genuinely has branches, applications and segments, the ceiling here is the highest on this page.

BEST CHEAP STARTING POINT

MailerLite

8.0 / 10 · $ · Small creators and side-project newsletters watching costs closely

MailerLite is where a first course launch can live for almost nothing. The free tier covers a real subscriber count, forms and landing pages are included, and the automation builder handles a welcome sequence and a straightforward launch sequence without much learning. The drag-and-drop editor is friendlier than most, and deliverability has been solid in our sends. For a creator pre-launching a course to a list of a few hundred people, this is enough, and the money saved is better spent on the course itself. The limits arrive with sophistication: branching automations are simpler than Kit's or ActiveCampaign's, reporting is basic, and there is no growth network. New accounts can also hit approval friction. Start here, and migrate when a launch sequence needs to know what each person did last time.

PAYMENT PROCESSING

The part that must never fail

Your platform charges the card, but the processor underneath decides whether a foreign card clears, how subscriptions renew, and who handles tax. It is worth understanding which one you are on.

BEST DEFAULT PROCESSOR

Stripe

9.0 / 10 · $ · Creators selling anything where checkout has to just work

Stripe is the plumbing under most of this page — Thinkific, Teachable, Kajabi and Memberful all connect to it — so understanding your Stripe dashboard is part of running a course business whether you chose it or not. Used directly, hosted Checkout handles cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and regional methods, remembers returning buyers, and manages the awkward parts of subscriptions: trials, upgrades, failed-card retries and cancellation timing. We processed live one-off and subscription payments including a deliberate failed-card retry and the dunning behaved correctly. There is no monthly fee; you pay per transaction. The catches are administrative rather than technical: sales tax and VAT are an add-on service unless your platform absorbs them, chargebacks are yours to argue, and the dashboard rewards people who read. The real question is never whether to use Stripe, but whether you also need a storefront on top of it.

BEST FOR SELLING A COURSE OR WORKSHOP WITH ZERO SETUP

Gumroad

7.8 / 10 · $ · Selling a single thing to your audience

Gumroad is the fastest possible route from "I could teach this" to money in an account: upload the files or link the videos, set a price, share a link. It handles checkout, delivery, licence keys, VAT and receipts, so a workshop recording or a mini-course can be on sale within an hour with no platform decision made. For validating whether people will pay before you build forty lessons, that speed is the whole value. The costs are the cut it takes on every sale — reasonable at low volume, expensive once something sells steadily — and a storefront that unmistakably belongs to Gumroad rather than you. There is no real course structure, progress tracking or quizzing either. Use it to test demand and to sell small products, then move the flagship course onto a proper platform once the revenue justifies it.

BEST MERCHANT OF RECORD FOR GLOBAL SALES

Lemon Squeezy

8.3 / 10 · $$ · Solo creators selling digital products internationally

Lemon Squeezy's pitch is that it becomes the merchant of record, which means it takes responsibility for global sales tax, VAT registration and remittance rather than leaving you to work out whether you owe money in a country you have never visited. For a course creator selling to buyers across dozens of tax jurisdictions, that removed obligation is worth real money and considerably more peace of mind than a slightly lower processing rate. Checkout is clean, subscriptions and licence keys are handled, and payouts are predictable. The trade-off is a higher effective fee than raw Stripe, because you are buying a compliance service alongside processing. It also carries less brand flexibility than your own checkout. If your sales are concentrated in one country, plain Stripe is cheaper; if they are genuinely global and tax admin is the thing keeping you up, this is the answer.

THE WORKFLOW

Need → solution, step by step.

  1. 1. Validate before you build
    PROOF SOMEONE WILL PAY

Sell a paid workshop or a small guide to your existing audience first. If nobody buys the $29 version, do not build the $499 version.

  2. 2. Outline the outcome
A CURRICULUM, NOT A TOPIC LIST

Write the promised outcome, then work backwards into modules. Each lesson should move a student one visible step closer to it.

  3. 3. Record the lessons
FORTY CLEAN VIDEOS WITHOUT FORTY SHOOT DAYS

Record screen and camera, edit the transcript, run filler-word removal and audio cleanup in the same pass, and caption everything.

  4. 4. Make the workbooks and slides
MATERIALS THAT LOOK LIKE ONE COURSE

Build locked templates for slides, worksheets and module thumbnails so every asset matches without new decisions.

  5. 5. Host the video
    RELIABLE, PRIVATE PLAYBACK

Use your platform's hosting to start; move to a dedicated host when branding, domain-locked privacy or re-cutting lessons matters.

  6. 6. Build the course on a platform
    STRUCTURE, QUIZZES, PROGRESS AND CERTIFICATES

Assemble modules, add a quiz per section, enable completion tracking, and enrol yourself as a test student on a phone before launch.

  7. 7. Wire up checkout and tax
    PAYMENTS THAT CLEAR INTERNATIONALLY

Connect the processor, test a real card and a failing card, and decide whether you or a merchant of record handles sales tax.

  8. 8. Launch to a list
A SEQUENCE THAT BEHAVES DIFFERENTLY FOR BUYERS

Run a warm-up, an open sequence and a close sequence, tagging on clicks and purchases so nobody gets pitched what they already own.

  9. 9. Keep it alive
    REVENUE AFTER LAUNCH WEEK

Add an evergreen funnel, refresh dated lessons with the replace-file trick, and consider a membership tier for graduates.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Questions we get asked.

What is the best course platform in 1970?
Thinkific for most creators, because it charges no revenue share and the student experience is solid. Kajabi if you will genuinely use its funnels and email. Teachable for the fastest familiar launch, and Stan for low-ticket mobile-first products.
Kajabi or Thinkific?
Kajabi is one subscription for courses, email, funnels and community — worth it only if you use the marketing half. Thinkific costs far less and does the teaching part as well or better, on the assumption you already have an email tool.
Do I need Vimeo if my course platform hosts video?
Not usually. Pay for Vimeo when you need an unbranded player, domain-locked privacy, or the ability to replace a lesson file without breaking existing embeds on your own site.
Who handles sales tax on course sales?
It depends on the stack. Some platforms absorb it, Stripe offers tax as a paid add-on, and Lemon Squeezy acts as merchant of record and handles VAT and sales tax for you at a higher effective fee.
