Patreon built the membership category and it still owns the mental real estate. If you say "I have a Patreon" everyone knows exactly what that means, and that brand recognition alone converts casual fans into paying members faster than a lesser-known tool.
We assessed Patreon alongside the rest of our monetization reviews, including Stripe, LearnWorlds and Thinkific, so the score below is relative to that field.
The tiers system is genuinely good. You can bundle Discord access, early posts, physical merch, and shoutouts into clean packages without touching code. Patrons already have saved cards from supporting other creators, so the checkout friction is lower than starting from zero on a random site.
Where it gets annoying is the money. Between the platform fee and payment processing, you are giving up a meaningful slice before it ever hits your bank account, and that adds up over a year of five-figure membership revenue. Payout holds and occasional account reviews have burned creators who needed cash flow predictability.
Discovery, despite some in-app browsing features, mostly does not work for cold audiences. You bring your own traffic from YouTube, TikTok, or a newsletter and Patreon converts it. Treat it as infrastructure, not a growth channel.
If you already have an audience elsewhere and want the fastest path to recurring revenue with zero engineering effort, Patreon remains a safe default in 2026.
| PLAN | PRICE | WHAT YOU GET |
|---|---|---|
| Lite | 5% /of revenue | plus payment processing fees |
| Pro | 8% /of revenue | analytics and merch tools |
| Premium | 12% /of revenue | team seats, priority support |
