Teachable alternatives.

Teachable is easy to start on and expensive to scale on. Transaction fees are the reason most people go looking.

WHY PEOPLE LEAVE TEACHABLE

Why creators leave Teachable.

Transaction fees on the lower tiers are the number one trigger. A percentage of every sale on top of the monthly subscription means the platform's cut grows exactly as your launch succeeds, and creators regularly discover they've paid more in fees than the annual cost of a competitor.

Second is that features have drifted upmarket. Things people consider basic — advanced quizzing, affiliate management, granular drip control, removing platform branding — sit on higher plans, so the effective price to run a professional course is well above the advertised entry point.

Third is the student experience and site control. The course player and checkout are functional rather than polished, customisation is limited, and your content sits on Teachable's infrastructure with SEO that mostly benefits Teachable. Creators who care about brand and organic traffic feel that constraint quickly.

THE SHORTLIST

5 Teachable alternatives worth considering.

  1. 01 · BEST OVERALL TEACHABLE ALTERNATIVE

    Thinkific

8.4 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR CREATORS WHO WANT A BETTER COURSE PRODUCT AT SIMILAR COST

Thinkific does the same job better in the places students notice: lesson structure, quizzing, cohorts and completion tracking, with no Thinkific transaction fee when you use Thinkific Payments and a 30-day free trial for building your first course. Setup takes slightly longer and the marketing tooling is light, but per dollar of revenue it's the stronger platform of the two.

vs Teachable: better course delivery, no cut of your sales.

  2. 02 · BEST IF YOU WANT EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE

    Kajabi

    7.9 / 10 · $$$ · BEST FOR ESTABLISHED CREATORS CONSOLIDATING A FULL FUNNEL

Kajabi replaces Teachable plus your email platform, landing pages and community, which is either excellent value or paying twice depending on what you already run. Pricing starts high and the individual components are each a little behind a specialist tool. Worth it once revenue is steady and the cost of juggling five subscriptions outweighs the price.

vs Teachable: far more marketing tooling, far higher floor price.

  3. 03 · BEST FOR SMALL PRODUCTS AND VALIDATION

    Gumroad

    7.8 / 10 · $ · BEST FOR ANYONE TESTING WHETHER A COURSE WILL SELL

No monthly fee, no build phase, a checkout link in minutes. Gumroad's per-sale fee is the highest here, so it's poor economics at volume, but as the place to sell version one of a course — or a workbook, template pack or mini-class — it removes every reason to delay. Move to a real LMS once it sells.

vs Teachable: nothing to set up, no subscription, higher fees.

  4. 04 · BEST FOR COHORTS AND COMMUNITY

    Whop

    8.0 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR CREATORS SELLING ACCESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Whop treats the purchase as access — to a Discord, a group, a cohort, a bundle of products — and its marketplace can actively bring you buyers, which no course platform does. Checkout is quick and modern. Structured curriculum with progress tracking isn't its strength, so a knowledge-heavy course still belongs on an LMS.

vs Teachable: sells access and community rather than curriculum.

  5. 05 · BEST FOR KEEPING YOUR OWN WEBSITE

    Memberful

7.9 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR CREATORS WITH AN EXISTING SITE AND AUDIENCE

Memberful adds paid memberships and gated content to a site you already own, so the SEO, design and email relationship stay yours. It's the right answer when the course is one product among several rather than the whole business. You do lose the course player, quizzes and progress tracking — you're building the experience yourself.

vs Teachable: your domain and your brand, none of the LMS features.

Should you actually switch?

If you're on a higher Teachable plan with fees removed and your students are happy, stay — you've already paid the setup cost and the differences from here are marginal. Migration means re-uploading every video and asking existing customers to log in somewhere new, which always loses a few.

Switch if you're on an entry plan and selling. Run the actual numbers: multiply last quarter's sales by the fee percentage and compare it to a year of Thinkific. For most creators past a few thousand in revenue the answer is obvious, and doing it between launches costs almost nothing.

STAY ON TEACHABLE IF
  • ✓You're on a plan where transaction fees are already waived.
  • ✓Your course library is large and re-uploading would take days.
  • ✓Students are enrolled in active drip schedules.
  • ✓You value the simplest possible admin over saving fees.
FAQ

Teachable alternatives, answered.

What is the best free Teachable alternative?
Gumroad, since it charges per sale instead of monthly — a good fit if you only have one small product. Thinkific no longer has a free plan, but its 30-day free trial lets you build and test a course before paying.
Does Teachable really take a cut of my sales?
On its lower tiers, yes — a transaction fee applies on top of the subscription, and it scales with revenue. Higher plans remove it. Check your last three months of payouts before assuming the cheap plan is the cheap option.
Which alternative is easiest to migrate to?
Thinkific, because the structure maps closely — modules to chapters, lessons to lessons — and you're mostly re-uploading video. Students and active subscriptions are the awkward part everywhere; expect to communicate a cutover and re-issue access rather than transfer billing.
Teachable or Thinkific for a first course?
Thinkific if you want the better student experience and no revenue share, Teachable if you want the fastest possible setup and don't mind the fee while you're small. Both are far more platform than a first course strictly needs.
