Stripe is less a creator tool than the plumbing under most of them. Teachable, Thinkific, Kajabi, Gumroad-adjacent stores, and almost every membership tool either run on it or connect to it, so understanding your Stripe dashboard is part of running a paid creator business whether you chose it or not. We connected it to a course platform and a standalone checkout and took live payments through both.
Hosted Checkout is the part most creators should use directly. It handles cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and regional methods, remembers returning buyers, and manages the awkward parts of subscriptions — trials, upgrades, failed-card retries, cancellation timing — without you writing logic. Recurring revenue reporting is clear enough to run a membership from.
The catches are administrative rather than technical. Sales tax and VAT are an add-on service unless your course platform absorbs it, chargebacks are yours to fight, and the dashboard rewards people who read. There is no monthly fee, so the real question is never whether to use Stripe but whether you also need a storefront on top of it.
| PLAN | PRICE | WHAT YOU GET |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 2.9% + 30c /transaction | No monthly fee; card rates vary by country |
| International cards | +1.5% /transaction | Added fee on non-domestic cards |
| Stripe Tax | 0.5% /transaction | Optional automated sales tax and VAT |
