Descript alternatives, sorted by the reason you're leaving

The best Descript alternative depends on why you're leaving. If it's cost, Riverside, Premiere Pro or the free version of DaVinci Resolve may cover you. If it's the free plan's 720p watermarked exports, CapCut or Resolve. If it's AI training terms, read the terms section before you switch, because some alternatives are looser than Descript, not stricter. And if you only want short clips, Opus Clip or CapCut do that job without a full editor.

Reason 1: You're paying for minutes and credits you keep running out of

Descript meters two things. Media minutes count everything you upload or record, including Rooms sessions, and AI credits are spent on features like Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Eye Contact, Green Screen, AI speech and Underlord, according to Descript's help center. Neither rolls over to the next month. Top-ups are only sold on Creator and Business (for example, 5 media hours for $25 and 350 AI credits for $35, per Descript's top-up page). Descript doesn't publish how many credits each feature uses, so a heavy editing month is hard to predict.

Example. Assumptions: one weekly interview show, four episodes a month, 90-minute recording sessions, recorded once in Rooms, no B-roll uploads. That's 6 media hours a month, which fits inside Hobbyist's 10. The squeeze is AI credits: if you run Studio Sound and filler-word removal on every episode, watch your balance in the first month. Hobbyist can't buy top-ups, so running out means waiting or upgrading to Creator ($24/mo annual).

Alternatives that charge differently:

Riverside (riverside.com): records each guest locally and includes text-based editing, unlimited transcriptions, Magic Clips and publishing. Pro is $24/month billed annually ($288/year) or $29 monthly, per Riverside's pricing FAQ, with 15 hours of separate-track downloads a month and up to 4K; Grow is $34 / $39 and adds live streaming. The free plan is 2 hours of multitrack recording, one time, at 720p with a watermark. Pick it if your show is remote interviews and you want recording and editing in one place. Skip it if you edit lots of uploaded footage, since Riverside's limits are built around its own recordings. See Descript vs Riverside.

Premiere Pro (adobe.com): Adobe's editor includes Speech to Text and text-based editing at no extra charge under a fair-use policy, in 18 languages, and it works offline once language packs are installed, per Adobe. Listed at $22.99/month. Pick it if you want transcript editing plus a full professional timeline. Skip it if you want Descript's one-click cleanup; Premiere is a bigger tool to learn. DaVinci Resolve (blackmagicdesign.com): the free version edits up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60fps. Text-based editing, the AI Neural Engine and AI noise reduction are in DaVinci Resolve Studio, a one-time $295 purchase, per Blackmagic Design. Pick Studio if you want to stop paying monthly. Skip it if you've never used a full NLE; Resolve covers editing, color, VFX and audio, and that's a lot of software.

Adobe Podcast (podcast.adobe.com): if you mainly pay Descript for Studio Sound, Adobe's Enhance Speech is free for files up to 30 minutes and 1 hour of processing a day. Premium (Enhance Speech on files up to 2 hours, up to 4 hours a day, video support, bulk upload) comes with Adobe's Firefly Pro plan at $19.99/month. Adobe Podcast Studio (labeled beta) also records remote guests and edits by transcript, with free downloads capped at 30-minute projects. It's a cleanup step, not a full editor. Reason 2: Export limits (watermarks, resolution, web-link caps)

Descript's free plan exports video at 720p with a watermark. Hobbyist removes the watermark and goes to 1080p; 4K starts on Creator. Shared web-link exports cap at 1 hour on Free and Hobbyist. Audio exports have no duration cap on any plan.

CapCut (capcut.com): CapCut restructured into Standard and Pro tiers in March 2026. Pro is $19.99/month or $179.99/year and exports up to 8K, per CapCut. Auto captions are now Pro-only, so the free tier is weaker for talking-head work than it used to be. CapCut's US terms are with TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. Pick it if your output is mostly vertical video and you want templates and effects. Skip it if transcript-first editing of long episodes is the core of your workflow.

Kapwing (kapwing.com): browser-based, with transcript editing and a Repurpose Studio for clips. Free gives 10 credits and exports at 720p with a watermark. Pro is $16/month billed annually ($192/year) or $24 monthly, with 1,000 credits a month and 4K export; Business is $50 / $64. Pick it if you want a browser editor a team can share. Skip it if you need offline desktop editing.

VEED (veed.io): browser-based editor with subtitles, filler-word removal, eye contact and AI generation, sold as Free, Lite, Pro and Enterprise. VEED's FAQ says free-plan videos carry a watermark that any paid plan removes, and AI credits refresh on renewal without rolling over. VEED's pricing page loads prices in the browser and didn't expose them to our check, so confirm current prices on veed.io before you buy.

DaVinci Resolve (free) is the strongest no-watermark option: Ultra HD export on the free version, per Blackmagic Design. The trade is that you edit on a timeline, not a transcript, unless you buy Studio.

Reason 3: Performance on long projects or Windows machines

You'll see creators complain about Descript slowing down on long, multi-track projects, especially on Windows. We couldn't find a published benchmark or a citable, verifiable user dataset, so treat that as anecdote, not fact. What we can verify: Descript's help center has a dedicated article on troubleshooting a "slow, glitchy, or lagging" editor, and Descript's system requirements list Windows 11 or later.

If performance is your reason, the fix may be a desktop NLE that renders locally:

• Final Cut Pro (apple.com): Mac only. $299.99 one time on the Mac App Store, or included in Apple Creator Studio at $12.99/month or $129/year. Apple lists automatic captions and Transcript Search (find spoken phrases across your footage). That's search, not editing by deleting text, so it's not a full Descript replacement. • DaVinci Resolve Studio and Premiere Pro (above) on Windows or Mac.

Before you migrate, try two things that cost nothing: split long episodes into separate projects, and use Descript's timeline export to hand the final mix to another editor (Descript exports timelines to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Resolve, Pro Tools, Logic, Audition and REAPER).

Reason 4: AI training terms

This is the reason with the most misinformation around it, so here's what the documents say.

Descript. Section 8.4(e) of Descript's Terms of Service (last updated February 25, 2025) says Descript may use your inputs and outputs from its generative tools "to train, improve, and develop its models and technologies (unless you have opted out of such use)", and that its third-party AI providers are contractually barred from training on them. Descript's help center adds that current production models use no Descript user data and that internal research models use data only from users who have data sharing turned on. To turn it off: App Settings, Profile tab, "Share data with Descript". Enterprise drives have data sharing off by default. Separately, if you create an AI voice clone, the terms allow de-identified training audio to be added to Descript's research datasets.

How the alternatives compare, per their own terms:

If training is your dealbreaker, the honest answer is that switching to Riverside or Opus Clip makes it worse, not better. A local desktop editor is the cleanest option. Or stay on Descript with data sharing off.

Reason 5: You really just want clips

If Descript is mostly your shorts factory, a dedicated clipper may be cheaper.

Opus Clip (opus.pro): AI picks moments from long videos and reframes them. Free is watermarked, limited to non-commercial use, and exports expire after three days. Starter is $15/month (monthly only); Pro is $14.50/month billed annually ($174/year) or $29 monthly. One credit equals one minute of source video, per Opus Clip's help center. Riverside's Magic Clips are included on its paid plans, and Kapwing's Repurpose Studio does the same job inside a full editor.

A note on recording: SquadCast and Rooms

Descript bought SquadCast, and remote recording is now built into Descript as Rooms (2 hours on Free, then 5, 15 and 25 hours a month by plan). Descript's help center says Rooms will eventually replace SquadCast, with no sunset date set. Rooms sessions count against media minutes by session length, not per participant. Should you stay on Descript?

Probably, if your show is conversational, you publish audio and video from one project, and filler-word removal and Studio Sound save you real time each week. Most of the reasons people leave have a cheaper fix than migrating: turn off data sharing, split long projects, move cleanup to Adobe Podcast's free tier, or hand the final edit to Premiere or Resolve with Descript's timeline export. Switch if you keep hitting the AI-credit ceiling on Hobbyist and don't want Creator, if you need watermark-free free exports, or if transcript editing has become a small part of a bigger timeline workflow.
