SquadCast.SquadCast in 2026: still running, no longer sold on its own

In transition: being replaced by Descript Rooms. Status checked Oct 8, 2026.

Is SquadCast still around?

Yes. As of October 2026, SquadCast still works: you sign in at app.squadcast.fm, schedule sessions, invite guests and download recordings. What changed is how you get it and where it's headed. Descript, which owns SquadCast, no longer sells it as its own product. The "Try Free" buttons on squadcast.fm lead to a pricing page whose "Subscribe" links go to Descript plans, and Descript's help center says a Descript account includes a SquadCast account at no extra cost.

The bigger change is Rooms, the recorder Descript built directly into its editor. Descript's help center is direct about it: "there's no need to maintain both SquadCast and Descript accounts," and in its Rooms FAQ, "Eventually, Descript Rooms will replace SquadCast." Descript says no sunset date is set, that it will give "plenty of notice," and that Rooms won't replace SquadCast until it meets or exceeds its capabilities.

So SquadCast isn't shut down. It's in a managed wind-down with no end date.

What SquadCast does well

The reason SquadCast built a following is documented in its help pages, and it still holds. Each participant is recorded locally as a separate file, and progressive upload sends that recording to the cloud in small chunks (about five seconds at a time) while you're still talking. If a guest's browser crashes or the Wi-Fi drops, the chunks already uploaded are safe and recording can resume, per Descript's documentation.

Audio records at 48 kHz, with a lossless WAV (PCM) option in Advanced Show Settings. Video goes up to 4K with a target bitrate of 30 Mbps, though frame rate is variable and tops out at 30 fps. On top of the primary files, SquadCast keeps two cloud backups: a combined conference recording up to 1080p and isolated per-participant tracks that scale down on a poor connection.

Guests join from a browser with no install, and SquadCast supports a long list of browsers and operating systems, including Android and iOS (beta). Recordings can go straight to Dropbox, into Descript through Edit in Descript (beta), or through Dolby one-click mastering. For producers running a booking pipeline, there's a public API, webhooks, Zapier, and integrations with Captivate and SavvyCal that create sessions automatically.

Where it falls short in 2026

The future isn't in SquadCast. Descript is building Rooms and has said so. It hasn't said which SquadCast features, such as Shows or show-manager logins, will move to Rooms. If your workflow depends on those, you're waiting on a decision you can't see.

Public pricing is out of date. squadcast.fm's pricing page lists the four Descript plans with SquadCast recording hours (1, 10, 30, 40) and feature descriptions ("Basic AI Suite, 20 uses/month") that don't match Descript's current pricing page, which meters media minutes and AI credits. The homepage still promotes events from early 2023. None of that breaks the product, but it makes it hard to know what you're buying.

The Descript handoff has rough edges. Edit in Descript is labeled beta, and Dolby-enhanced files and cloud backups can't go through it; you download and import those by hand.

No virtual backgrounds while recording; Descript's help center suggests adding them in Descript afterwards.

SquadCast vs Descript Rooms

Both record a separate file per participant and upload progressively, per Descript's quality documentation. Differences that matter:

If you edit in Descript, Rooms removes a step. If you rely on SquadCast's API, booking integrations, MP3 recording or the combined conference backup, SquadCast still does things Rooms doesn't document.

What to use instead

• You edit in Descript: use Rooms. It's included in your plan, and Descript is putting its work there. See our Descript review.

If you're an existing SquadCast user

1. Keep recording; nothing has been switched off.
2. Download anything you can't afford to lose. Descript's help center says account deletion is permanent and removes all media.
3. If your SquadCast and Descript accounts aren't linked, link them so billing runs through one subscription and SquadCast recordings don't use transcription time when imported.
4. Run your next low-stakes recording in Rooms to see what's missing for your show, and send Descript feature requests for anything you rely on. Descript says it's using that feedback to decide what carries over.
5. Watch for a sunset notice. Descript has committed to notice; it hasn't committed to a date.

Our verdict

SquadCast's recording design (local tracks, progressive upload, double backups) is still sound, and if it's working for your show there's no emergency. But we can't recommend starting a new podcast on a product its owner is steering people away from. For new shows, use Rooms if you edit in Descript, or Riverside if you want a standalone recorder.
