A charming free mini-site you build on your phone, but its 7% to 12% selling fee makes it a poor place to run real sales.

★ THE REVIEW

Milkshake is a free, phone-built mini-site that looks better than a plain link list and costs almost nothing to run. The catch shows up when you sell: Milkshake takes 12% of each sale on the free plan and 7% even on its top plan, and its selling feature is still in beta with a $100 price cap.

What it does well

The free plan is real. Milkshake's pricing page lists unlimited links and "Cards" (swipeable pages), templates, color and font controls, QR codes, 30 days of analytics and free hosting, with no credit card. You build and edit everything in the iPhone or Android app.

Paid tiers are cheap. Lite at US$2.99 a month only removes the Milkshake branding. Pro, at $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, adds a contact form, a mailing-list Card that syncs to Google Sheets or Mailchimp, a Meta pixel, SEO fields, a social sharing image, a UTM campaign builder and a full year of exportable analytics.

Your money goes to your Stripe account. Milkshake's selling page says payments land in your own connected Stripe account, and you set the payout schedule in Stripe. Buyers don't need the app. They pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay and get a secure link by email.

Refunds are handled fairly. Milkshake's help center says it returns its fee in proportion to any refund. Stripe keeps its processing fee either way.

Where it falls short

The selling fee. Milkshake's pricing FAQ and help center list 12% per sale on Free and Lite, 9% on Pro and 7% on Pro+, plus Stripe's processing fee. There is no 0% plan.

Selling is in beta. The Sell Card, per Milkshake's own selling page, caps prices between US$1 and US$100, delivers a file (up to 100MB), a link or a private note, and only works where Stripe's full functionality is supported. There are no courses, memberships, bookings or upsells.

Email capture is thin. The mailing-list Card syncs to Google Sheets or Mailchimp only, and only on Pro. We found no documented direct connection to Kit, beehiiv or MailerLite, so you'd need Sheets or a Zapier-style bridge.

Custom domain costs more. Free, Lite and Pro sites live on a msha.ke address. Your own domain needs Pro+.

App-only, app-store billing. You can't edit on a computer, and subscriptions run through the Apple App Store or Google Play, so cancellations happen there, not in Milkshake. Milkshake also notes prices may vary by country and platform.

Pricing in practice

From Milkshake's pricing page (USD):

  • Free: $0. Unlimited links and Cards, 30-day analytics, selling at a 12% fee.
  • Lite: $2.99/mo billed monthly. Removes branding. Selling fee stays 12%.
  • Pro: $6.99/mo billed monthly, or $59.99/yr billed annually (about $5/mo). Forms, mailing list, pixel, SEO, 365-day analytics, 9% fee, free $0 items.
  • Pro+: $29.99 billed quarterly (about $10/mo), or $99.99/yr billed annually (about $8.33/mo). Custom domain, Google Analytics, 7% fee.

There's no free trial on paid plans.

Example. Assumptions: 20 sales a month of a $15 preset pack ($300 gross), US seller, Stripe processing left out because it's the same on every plan. On Free you pay $36 in Milkshake fees. On Pro (monthly) you pay $27 in fees plus $6.99, so $33.99. On Pro+ (annual) you pay $21 plus about $8.33, so about $29.33. At this volume the plans cost roughly the same. The fee, not the subscription, is the number to watch.

EDITOR'S NOTE
"Cheap to run, expensive to sell through."

Who should pick it (and who shouldn't)

Pick Milkshake if you want a nicer-looking free page than a link list, you're on your phone anyway, and you sell a cheap digital item now and then.

Skip it if selling is a real income line, if you want a list in Kit or beehiiv without workarounds, or if you need to price anything above $100.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Linktree: similar free tier, CSV export on all plans and native Kit and beehiiv sync on Pro and up.
  • Beacons: a free plan plus a 0% fee once you reach Creator Plus.
  • Stan: 0% platform fees and a full checkout, but no free plan.
  • Carrd: your own domain and email-tool forms for $19 a year, if you can live without a phone editor.
