★ THE REVIEW

Buy Me a Coffee is the friendliest way to take tips and run a small membership without paying a monthly fee. The 5% headline fee is real, but it isn't the whole bill: Stripe's processing, a payout charge and a subscription surcharge sit on top, and tax compliance is entirely yours. Here's our read of Buy Me a Coffee's FAQ and help center, checked October 10, 2026.

What it does well

Simple for supporters. Supporters can pay without creating an account, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You get one-off support, monthly support, memberships (with free trials, pauses and lifetime levels), a shop, posts and emails to members, with no feature tiers.

You own the list. Buy Me a Coffee's FAQ says your supporters are "strictly yours", that it doesn't email them, and that you can export the list any time.

Your Stripe account. Buy Me a Coffee has moved creators to Stripe Standard Connect, which gives you a full Stripe dashboard where you set your payout schedule, bank account and tax details. Its tax article describes supporters paying "directly into the creators' accounts".

Pass the card fee on if you like. A setting lets supporters cover the card fee. Buy Me a Coffee's example: a $25 contribution becomes a $26.03 charge.

Automation hooks. Zapier, signed webhooks for donations, shop orders and membership events, and Discord role syncing for members.

Where it falls short

The real fee is higher than 5%. The help center lists Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30, 0.5% payout processing, +0.5% on subscription payments and +1% on transactions outside the US. On small, recurring amounts, the $0.30 does the damage (see the Example).

No tax tools. Buy Me a Coffee says it doesn't collect or remit sales tax or VAT, and has no built-in way to add it yet. If you sell shop items or memberships into places that require it, that's on you.

First payout takes a while. Your first payout request triggers a manual account review; the help center says it typically takes 7 to 14 days in total. The minimum payout balance is $10.

Leaving means re-asking. We found no documented way to move active memberships to another platform. Buy Me a Coffee's own switching guide for Patreon creators relies on inviting members to join again.

Pricing in practice

There's one plan: $0/month and a 5% platform fee per transaction. Stripe's fees and the surcharges are deducted on top. Dispute fees are typically $15 in the US and aren't refunded even if you win.

Example (assumptions: 100 members paying $5/month, all US cards, creator covers fees):

  • 5% platform fee: $25
  • Stripe 2.9% + $0.30: $14.50 + $30 = $44.50
  • 0.5% subscription surcharge: $2.50
  • 0.5% payout processing: $2.50
  • Total $74.50 of $500 (14.9%). You keep $425.50.

At $10 a month the same 100 members cost $119 of $1,000 (11.9%). Raising the price, or offering annual memberships, cuts the share lost to the fixed $0.30.

EDITOR'S NOTE
"5% is the headline. Add Stripe and the surcharges before you compare."

Who should pick it (and who shouldn't)

Pick Buy Me a Coffee if you want a tip jar and a light membership up and running in minutes, and you're happy for Stripe to sit underneath it. Export your supporter list regularly, or pipe new members into KitAFFILIATE (affiliate link) through Zapier.

Skip it if your memberships are low-priced and high-volume, if you need tax handled, or if members expect a community space rather than posts.

Alternatives worth comparing

  • Ko-fi: 0% on one-off tips on its free option, and a flat monthly plan that removes its fee.
  • Patreon: more built-in community, video and discovery, at a higher platform fee.
  • Memberful: memberships on your own site and Stripe account.
  • Payhip: if your shop matters more than tips and you want tax handled.
