TikTok for Business: what marketers and creators need to know

Carlos Gil's original TikTok masterclass, plus a written guide checked against TikTok's own help pages in October 2026: what changed, what still holds, and how to run TikTok as a workflow instead of a lottery ticket.

BY CARLOS GIL·PUBLISHED OCT 13, 2026·LAST UPDATED OCT 13, 2026EDITORIALLY REVIEWED

Editorially reviewed by Carlos Gil. Facts about TikTok's features were checked on TikTok's own help center, Business Help Center, Creator Academy and newsroom on October 13, 2026, and are listed in the sources below. BestCreates has no commercial relationship with TikTok; TikTok links on this page are plain links. How we review.

The short answer: TikTok for Business is the set of tools TikTok gives companies on top of the app itself: a Verified Business Account, analytics in Business Suite, a library of music cleared for commercial use, Ads Manager for paid campaigns, and TikTok One for working with creators. TikTok can help a business reach and teach an audience with short video, but only if the audience is there and you can make native-feeling video consistently. Organic posting, creator partnerships and paid ads are three different jobs. Treat them as one strategy and you'll measure the wrong things.

Editor's note: Carlos recorded this video in early 2021 (published February 8, 2021). TikTok has changed a lot since then: business accounts have their own music library, the Discover tab has largely become the Friends tab, and TikTok now has dedicated tools for ads, creators and trends. The video is the original perspective; the written guide below reflects TikTok's help pages as checked on October 13, 2026.

READ THE VIDEO SUMMARY

An edited summary of the video, by chapter. Follower and view figures are Carlos's own numbers from early 2021.

Intro (0:00). Carlos frames the video as five keys to marketing on TikTok, from his own experience growing a business there. He admits he was a critic until 2020, when he saw it as a kids' dance app, and warns that anyone promising specific results without data and time should be taken with a grain of salt. By early 2021, he says, his personal account had passed his decade-old Instagram following in about six months, and Outlaw Masks, the e-commerce brand he ran with his brother-in-law, had grown to 200,000+ followers without ad spend.

Content (4:40). Content matters more on TikTok than anywhere else: the first second has to earn attention. He recommends emotional connection over pitching, which is why he moved his personal account from marketing talk to his family and life story. Outlaw Masks posted feel-good videos, like mask giveaways and his brother-in-law reacting when pro athletes wore their masks. His formula: short, eye-catching and emotional, with customer stories as an easy starting format.

Music (6:32). Music shapes how a video feels, so match the song to the story. In 2021 he recommended trending songs as a growth tactic. Update: business accounts can now use only TikTok's Commercial Music Library.

Discover (7:50). Check trending hashtags and challenges daily and join the moments that fit your brand, which he ties to his "moments over marketing" idea. Update: for many users the Discover tab is now the Friends tab; TikTok points businesses to Creative Center Trends instead.

Text overlays (8:34). Use on-screen text that tells a short story; Outlaw Masks centered its text mid-screen to hold attention.

Go live (9:06). He notes the 1,000-follower threshold for a bio link and for LIVE, suggests going LIVE right after posting, and recommends making videos people rewatch. Update: LIVE now also requires being 18+, and verified business accounts can add a website link without the follower minimum. His points about how the algorithm rewards LIVE and rewatches are his 2021 opinion, not something TikTok documents.

What TikTok for Business means today

"TikTok for Business" isn't one product. It's an umbrella over several tools, and knowing which one does what saves a lot of confusion:

ToolWhat it's for
Verified Business AccountThe account type TikTok says to use if your main goal is promoting a business, product or service. It unlocks Business Suite, the Commercial Music Library and a website link on your profile.
Business SuiteAnalytics (including conversion analytics), a leads manager and the Creative Hub, in the app or on the web.
Commercial Music LibraryAbout 1 million songs cleared for commercial use, free for organic posts, ads and branded content.
Ads ManagerTikTok's self-serve ad platform: pick an objective, audience, bid and budget.
Business CenterAdmin for teams and agencies: users, permissions, ad accounts, Pixels, catalogs and billing.
Creative CenterFree trend research: top ads, trending hashtags and creative tools.
TikTok OneWhere brands and creators find each other and run paid partnerships (it includes Creator Marketplace).
Spark AdsAds that run real TikTok posts, yours or a creator's with their permission, instead of separate ad creative.
TikTok ShopSelling inside TikTok through videos, LIVE and the Showcase tab, in supported markets.

One more thing changed since the video: in the US, TikTok now operates through TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, announced on January 23, 2026, which handles US data protection, trust and safety and the US recommendation system. Advertising and e-commerce remain with TikTok's global business. For marketers the day-to-day tools are the same, but it's worth knowing who you're contracting with.

Is TikTok a fit for your business?

TikTok tends to fit when your product or expertise is easy to show, your customers already spend time on short video, and you can publish regularly without it becoming a production crisis. Creator-led brands, educators, consumer products, services with a visible before-and-after, local businesses with personality, and personal brands all have obvious angles.

Think twice if:

  • Your audience isn't there. Ask your best customers where they watch video before you commit a quarter to it.
  • You can't produce consistently. TikTok rewards a steady stream of native video. A burst of five posts and a two-month gap teaches you nothing.
  • You're in a tightly regulated category. Finance, health and similar fields carry extra ad and content rules; read TikTok's policies for your category first.
  • Your plan is "go viral." Virality isn't a strategy, and TikTok publishes no formula for it.
  • You need immediate direct sales from organic posts. Organic content usually builds awareness and trust first. If you need predictable conversions, that's what the paid tools and TikTok Shop are for.

Organic content, creator partnerships and paid ads

These are three different approaches. TikTok facts are sourced; the other cells are our editorial judgment.

The practical sequence most brands land on: post organically to learn what works, then put paid budget behind the posts that already perform, including creators' posts through Spark Ads.

Business account or personal account?

TikTok now has three account types: a General (personal) account, a Verified Business Account and an Organization Account for teams (available only in some markets and created through business platforms such as TikTok Shop Seller Center). TikTok says anyone whose main goal is promoting a business, product or service should use a Verified Business Account, and recommends keeping personal content on a separate personal account.

The trade-off that matters most is music. A Verified Business Account gets Business Suite, conversion analytics and a website link on the profile with no follower minimum, but it can't use the general music library; it's limited to the Commercial Music Library. A personal account keeps the full music library, but needs 1,000 followers before it can add a website link. TikTok also advises against switching back and forth between account types.

If you're a creator who is the business (a personal brand, a coach, a consultant), the decision is less obvious. Read TikTok's account types guide before switching, and don't build your strategy around songs a business account can't use.

A practical TikTok workflow

  1. Define the audience and the objective. Awareness, leads and sales need different content and different metrics.
  2. Research what's native in your niche. Watch the accounts your customers watch. TikTok's Creative Center shows trending hashtags and top ads.
  3. Pick three to five repeatable content pillars. Repeatable formats beat one-off ideas.
  4. Script the hook and the payoff. Carlos's advice from the video still holds: earn attention in the first second.
  5. Record vertical first. TikTok accepts uploads up to 60 minutes, but most business content works best when it's as short as the idea allows.
  6. Edit for clarity and pace. Cut dead air; use on-screen text that tells the story.
  7. Add captions. They help anyone watching with the sound off and make the video accessible.
  8. Publish with accurate context, including TikTok's commercial content disclosure whenever a post promotes a brand, product or service.
  9. Engage with comments. Replies are content ideas.
  10. Measure and iterate against the objective you set in step 1.

Content formats to test

Education, product demonstrations, behind the scenes, answers to customer questions, founder perspective, comparisons, myth-busting, process videos, reactions and customer stories. Carlos's 2021 formula of short, eye-catching and emotional is still a sensible lens. None of these formats is guaranteed to perform; test a few, keep what your analytics support, and drop the rest.

The creator-tool stack for TikTok

TikTok's own app and TikTok Studio cover a lot. These tools help with the jobs around them. Each links to our full review:

  • Edit: CapCut for vertical editing on phone, browser or desktop (check our review for which features need a paid plan), or Descript if you edit talking-head video by editing the transcript.
  • Captions: Captions or Submagic for styled captions on talking-head clips.
  • Repurpose long videos: Opus Clip or Klap turn podcasts and long videos into vertical clips; Klap can post them to TikTok. Compare them in the best AI clipping tools.
  • Design covers and graphics: Canva.
  • Schedule: TikTok Studio on the web schedules posts up to 30 days ahead, free. Third-party schedulers post through TikTok's Content Posting API; Buffer supports TikTok, and our social scheduling guide covers the rest.

What to measure

Match the metric to the objective, not to what's easiest to screenshot:

  • Awareness: reach, video views, watch time and completion.
  • Community: comments, shares, follows and profile visits.
  • Traffic and leads: website clicks from your profile link, lead forms, and visits you can attribute.
  • Sales: orders through TikTok Shop or tracked conversions in Ads Manager with a Pixel.

Business Suite (verified business accounts) and TikTok Studio (personal accounts) show post, follower and LIVE analytics. Attribution is never perfect: plenty of people see a TikTok, then search for you on Google days later. Ask new customers where they heard about you.

Risks and limitations

  • Platform dependency. You don't own your TikTok audience. Move followers to an email list you control.
  • Production load. Short video still takes real time to make well.
  • Policy and feature changes. Account types, music rules and the Discover tab all changed since the video. Expect more change.
  • Regional availability. Business verification, Organization Accounts, LIVE, TikTok One thresholds and TikTok Shop all vary by market.
  • Music rights. Business accounts are limited to the Commercial Music Library; don't assume a trending song is available to a brand.
  • Disclosure. Promotional posts need the commercial content disclosure setting, or they may be ineligible for the For You feed.
  • Attribution. TikTok's reporting won't capture every sale it influences.
  • Creative fatigue. Formats that work today wear out; plan to keep testing new ones.

Launch checklist

  • Decide on the account type and read the music trade-off first.
  • Write down one objective and the metric that proves it.
  • Choose three to five content pillars.
  • Batch-record your first two weeks of posts.
  • Set up captions and a simple editing workflow.
  • Turn on commercial content disclosure for anything promotional.
  • Schedule in TikTok Studio or a scheduler that supports TikTok.
  • Add a profile link to an email sign-up or offer page.
  • Review analytics weekly; change one thing at a time.

Our take

The best idea in Carlos's 2021 video wasn't a hack. It was the shift from marketing at people to connecting with them, and that still holds. What changed is the machinery around it: business accounts have their own music rules, trends live in Creative Center, creators are found through TikTok One, and paid support runs through Ads Manager and Spark Ads. If your audience is on TikTok and you can show up consistently, start organic, learn what works, then pay to scale it. If you can't do both, put the effort into the channel your customers already use.

COMMON QUESTIONS
What is TikTok for Business?

It's TikTok's set of tools for companies: the Verified Business Account, Business Suite analytics, the Commercial Music Library, Ads Manager, Business Center, Creative Center, TikTok One for creator partnerships, and TikTok Shop where available.

Is TikTok good for small businesses?

It can be, if your customers use TikTok and you can make short, native-feeling video consistently. The business tools are free, but results depend on content and fit, and nothing is guaranteed.

Do I need a business account?

TikTok says anyone whose main goal is promoting a business, product or service should use a Verified Business Account. It adds Business Suite and a website link, but limits you to the Commercial Music Library.

Can a business account use trending sounds?

Only songs in the Commercial Music Library. Verified Business Accounts can't use the general music library, because those songs aren't cleared for commercial use.

How often should a business post on TikTok?

TikTok doesn't publish an official number. Pick a cadence you can sustain for months, then use your analytics to adjust.

Can I schedule TikTok posts?

Yes. TikTok Studio on the web schedules posts up to 30 days ahead, and third-party tools can publish through TikTok's Content Posting API once their app passes TikTok's audit.

Should I use organic content or ads?

Usually both, in order: organic to learn what resonates, then ads (often Spark Ads on posts that already work) to scale. Ads Manager requires campaign budgets above $50 a day and ad group budgets above $20 a day.

Can TikTok content drive sales?

It can. Ads Manager has a Sales objective, and TikTok Shop lets sellers sell through videos, LIVE and the Showcase tab in supported markets. Whether it works depends on the product and the execution.
