Gumroad alternatives.

Gumroad is the fastest way to start selling and the most expensive way to keep selling. The fee is the whole story.

WHY PEOPLE LEAVE GUMROAD

Why creators leave Gumroad.

Fees. Gumroad's flat per-sale cut is easy to accept at ten sales a month and painful at a thousand — it's a permanent revenue share on a product you already made, with no volume relief. Creators doing real numbers routinely find they're handing over more per year than a full platform subscription would cost.

Second is control of the buyer relationship. Checkout, receipts, the product page and the emails all wear Gumroad's clothes, discovery has been dialled back over the years, and customer data flows through a system you don't govern. For anyone building a brand rather than a side project, that's a limit.

Third is feature depth. There's no real course player, no proper subscription management, limited licensing and thin tax and invoicing controls compared with purpose-built merchants. Fine for a PDF; frustrating for a business with a product line.

THE SHORTLIST

6 Gumroad alternatives we'd actually use.

  1. 01 · BEST OVERALL GUMROAD ALTERNATIVE

    Lemon Squeezy

    8.3 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR DIGITAL PRODUCT SELLERS WHO WANT A MERCHANT OF RECORD

Lemon Squeezy handles the annoying parts properly: it acts as merchant of record so global VAT and sales tax are its problem, supports licence keys, subscriptions and proper invoicing, and the checkout looks like your brand rather than a platform's. Fees are lower than Gumroad's at almost any volume. It's more setup than pasting a link, and less discovery — nobody browses Lemon Squeezy.

vs Gumroad: lower fees, real tax handling, no built-in audience.

  2. 02 · LOWEST FEES

    Stripe

9.0 / 10 · $ · BEST FOR CREATORS COMFORTABLE WIRING UP THEIR OWN CHECKOUT

Going direct to Stripe is the cheapest route by a wide margin: standard card processing and nothing on top. Payment Links and Checkout mean you don't need a developer for a simple product. What you take on is tax compliance, file delivery, licence keys and refunds — each solvable, none free of your time. Best once revenue justifies the plumbing.

vs Gumroad: keeps almost all the money, hands you all the admin.

  3. 03 · BEST FREE OPTION

    Ko-fi

7.8 / 10 · free · BEST FOR CREATORS SELLING SMALL PRODUCTS AND TAKING TIPS

Ko-fi's free tier takes no platform cut on tips or, on its paid plan, on shop sales — just payment processing. It handles donations, memberships, commissions and digital downloads in one friendly page, which suits artists and community-funded creators better than a formal storefront. Feature depth is modest and it isn't built for a product catalogue.

vs Gumroad: keeps more of small payments, less of a storefront.

  4. 04 · BEST FOR ACCESS AND COMMUNITY PRODUCTS

    Whop

8.0 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR SELLERS OF MEMBERSHIPS, DISCORD ACCESS AND COHORTS

Whop is built around selling access rather than files, with memberships, subscriptions and a marketplace that can send buyers your way — the discovery Gumroad quietly stopped providing. Checkout is modern and conversion-focused. Less suitable for a straightforward ebook or template pack, and fees apply per sale.

vs Gumroad: sells access with discovery attached, not just downloads.

  5. 05 · BEST IF THE PRODUCT IS A COURSE

    Thinkific

    8.4 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR CREATORS WHOSE GUMROAD PRODUCT IS REALLY A VIDEO COURSE

Selling a course as a zip of videos through Gumroad wastes the product. Thinkific gives students a real player, progress tracking, quizzes and completion, which improves refund rates and testimonials more than any checkout tweak. There's a monthly fee and no per-sale cut, so the maths flips in your favour with volume.

vs Gumroad: an actual course experience instead of a download link.

  6. 06 · BEST FOR RECURRING AUDIENCE SUPPORT

    Patreon

    7.6 / 10 · $$ · BEST FOR CREATORS WHOSE INCOME IS ONGOING RATHER THAN PER-PRODUCT

If people are really paying for you rather than a product, Patreon's tiers, member feed and app do that better than repeated one-off Gumroad sales. Fees are meaningful and the platform owns a lot of the relationship, but recurring revenue from an existing audience is far steadier than launch spikes.

vs Gumroad: recurring support instead of one-off purchases.

THE HONEST BIT

Should you actually switch?

Under a few hundred dollars a month, don't bother. Gumroad's fee on small revenue is less than the value of the evening you'd spend rebuilding checkout, and its simplicity is a real feature when you're still testing what sells.

Above that, do the arithmetic once: fees paid last year versus Lemon Squeezy's rate, or versus Stripe plus a weekend of setup. Most sellers past that threshold save real money, and the ones selling courses gain more from a proper player than from the fee saving. Keep the Gumroad listing live during the move — links in old posts and emails outlive every migration plan.

STAY ON GUMROAD IF
  • You sell a handful of products a month and value zero admin.
  • Your buyers arrive from existing Gumroad links you can't update.
  • You don't want to own tax compliance for digital goods.
  • You're still testing whether the product sells at all.
FAQ

Gumroad alternatives, answered.

What is the cheapest Gumroad alternative?
Stripe direct — you pay card processing and nothing more — but you own tax compliance, file delivery and refunds. For a managed option, Lemon Squeezy is materially cheaper than Gumroad at most volumes and handles VAT for you as merchant of record.
Which alternative handles EU VAT and sales tax?
Lemon Squeezy acts as merchant of record, which means it collects and remits VAT and US sales tax on your behalf — the same protection Gumroad provides. Patreon handles VAT for memberships. With Stripe direct, that obligation is entirely yours.
Can I sell courses without Gumroad's fees?
Thinkific charges a monthly subscription and takes no share of sales, so any course selling consistently costs less there than on Gumroad — and students get a real player with progress tracking instead of a download.
Will I lose sales by moving off Gumroad?
A few, from stale links and from buyers who trust a familiar checkout. Keep the Gumroad product live and pointing at the new page for a few months, update your highest-traffic posts and emails first, and the leakage is small.
