Wondershare Filmora is a desktop video editor for Windows and Mac, with separate apps for iOS, iPadOS and Android. Wondershare launched it in 2010, and Filmora 16, released in September 2026, puts timeline editing, color tools, captions, screen recording and generative AI in one app. The headline prices are yearly: US$49.99 for Basic and US$59.99 for Advanced, or US$79.99 once for a Perpetual license. Three details change what you pay and what you can publish: most AI tools spend credits, the individual plans don't cover brand or company videos, and the pricing page pre-ticks a Creative Assets trial that renews at US$19.99 a month.
We assessed Wondershare Filmora alongside the rest of our video reviews, including Captions, Streamlabs and Kapwing, so the score below is relative to that field.
What it does well
- One license, both desktops. Wondershare says a Basic or Advanced license works on Windows and Mac. Filmora supports Windows 7, 8.1, 10 and 11 on x64, Windows 10 and 11 on ARM, and macOS 10.15 Catalina to macOS 26 Tahoe, including Apple M-series Macs.
- Editing tools on every plan. Filmora's plan comparison lists a magnetic timeline, multi-camera editing, planar and motion tracking, keyframe animation, HSL, 3D LUTs, RGB curves and HDR on all four plans, Free included. Filmora 16 added camera tracking, Color Mask, 360° video reframing, AI Media Analysis for labelling clips, and multi-source recording of screen, camera and audio in one take.
- Captions and recording. Wondershare says speech-to-text covers 27 languages and text-to-speech 28. Filmora 16 keeps subtitles on their own track and adds Smart Text Correction for caption errors, and the screen recorder has a teleprompter (added in version 15.6) and game-window recording.
- Hand-off and publishing. Filmora exports XML timelines that Wondershare says are compatible with Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro, and its export window uploads directly to YouTube, TikTok and Vimeo. Output formats include MP4, MOV, MKV, HEVC and AV1 MP4, with 8K export to MP4 or Apple ProRes MOV.
- Published AI credit costs. Wondershare lists what each AI feature costs: speech-to-text is 4 credits a minute, AI Video Enhancer 20 credits a run, AI Object Remover 100, and AI text-to-video on Google Veo 3.1 450 credits a generation.
Where it falls short
- Watermarked free exports. Videos exported from the free version carry a Filmora watermark, and cloud storage and the full Creative Assets library need a paid plan.
- AI runs on credits. Basic includes no AI credits. Advanced includes 1,000 every 30 days, and unused credits are reclaimed when the next batch is issued. At the published rates, that's about 250 minutes of speech-to-text, or two Veo 3.1 text-to-video generations, a month. Wondershare also sells credit packs, valid for a year, but its pricing and credits pages don't list their price.
- A pre-ticked add-on. On Oct 17, 2026, all three plan cards on the pricing page had the "Filmora Creative Assets" 7-day free trial ticked by default. Wondershare says each ID gets one trial, which renews automatically from day 8 at US$19.99 a month and doesn't include the software. A pop-up on the same page also offers an extra discount on Filmora for adding the trial. Untick it if you only want the editor.
- Commercial-use rules. Wondershare's Team & Business FAQ says a YouTube channel that belongs to a company or brand needs the business plan. On an individual plan, a commercial video, such as one with a paid product placement, must say in its description that it was made with Filmora. Wondershare also says AI images, stickers, text-to-video output and AI sound effects are for non-commercial use, and that not all built-in music and fonts are cleared for commercial use.
- Perpetual limits. The Perpetual license is device-specific (a Windows license runs only on Windows, a Mac license only on Mac) and gets updates within Filmora 16 only. Future major versions cost extra, and desktop licenses don't cover the mobile apps.
- Refund fine print. The pricing page offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, subject to Wondershare's refund policy. That policy excludes change-of-mind requests, used credits, dissatisfaction with AI output, and renewals that weren't cancelled before the charge.
Pricing in practice
Prices are in US dollars from Filmora's pricing, Team & Business and education pages, checked Oct 17, 2026. The pricing page offers other currencies and was showing a countdown banner for an extra 10% off at checkout. The prices below are before that discount.
- Free ($0): the editor with watermarked exports, a smaller asset library (1,500+ effects and filters, 600+ stock media items) and 15 AI Mate uses a day.
- Basic (US$49.99/year, auto-renews): Windows and Mac, no watermark, 4K export, 1 GB of cloud storage, version upgrades while subscribed and 500 AI Mate conversations a month. No AI credits.
- Advanced (US$59.99/year, shown down from US$69.99): everything in Basic plus 1,000 AI credits every 30 days and 10 GB of cloud storage.
- Perpetual (US$79.99 one-time): one Windows or one Mac license, updates within Filmora 16, 1,000 AI credits that don't expire and 1 GB of cloud storage.
- Team (US$155.88/year for one user): bought online for one to five users, with company use and no attribution required, but no AI credit benefits or Creative Assets access. Larger teams go through a sales form.
- Students: after verification, Windows student plans are listed at US$19.99 a month, US$39.99 a year or US$49.99 one-time. Mac student prices differed between versions of Filmora's education page on Oct 17, 2026, from those same figures up to US$21.99 a month, US$55.99 a year and US$59.99 one-time.
Example: Basic and Advanced are US$10 a year apart, and the difference is 1,000 AI credits every 30 days plus 9 GB more storage. A creator who transcribes about four hours of footage a month (240 minutes at 4 credits a minute is 960 credits) stays inside Advanced's allowance. Three months of the Creative Assets add-on at US$19.99 costs about as much as a year of Advanced, so look for that box before you pay.
Who should pick it (and who shouldn't)
Pick Filmora if you're a solo creator on Windows or Mac editing YouTube videos, tutorials or social clips for your own channel, you want captions, screen recording and templates in the same app, and you'd rather pay yearly or once than monthly.
Skip it if your channel belongs to a company or brand (that needs the separately priced Team & Business plan), if you need Linux, if you need commercial rights to AI images, stickers, text-to-video clips or AI sound effects, or if you'd rather not track AI credits.
Alternatives worth comparing
- CapCut for short-form editing on phone, desktop and web, with a free plan.
- DaVinci Resolve for a free editor with deeper color grading on Mac, Windows and Linux.
- Final Cut Pro for Mac-only editors who want a one-time license.
- Premiere Pro for agency and client pipelines. Filmora's XML export can hand a timeline over.
- Descript for editing talking-head video through its transcript.
