Adobe XD.Review 2026: a good tool Adobe stopped feeding, so do not start here

No, not for anything new. Adobe XD still opens and runs, but Adobe has stopped building it, so it only makes sense if you already have an XD file library and a team that knows it. Creators choosing a design tool in 2026 should start somewhere with a roadmap.

Adobe put XD into maintenance mode in 2023, while its planned Figma acquisition was still pending (the deal was abandoned that December). Adobe's support page says it is not investing in ongoing development or shipping new features, and will only fix bugs and address security or privacy issues. Adobe also says it will give significant notice before support ends, which is a reason not to build a new library here.

What it does well

XD is still fast and light for simple screens. Its prototyping model (artboards wired into a clickable flow, plus auto-animate) is easy for beginners to understand. Files live on your machine, so you don't need a browser, and Creative Cloud asset handoff with Photoshop and Illustrator still works for teams already in that stack.

For a creator, the practical use is narrow: updating an old landing-page mockup, a course-platform wireframe or an app prototype that already exists in XD.

Where it falls short

Nothing new is coming. Collaboration is still built around sharing links to snapshots rather than editing the same file together, so it's far behind Figma for live multiplayer work. Variables, dev-mode handoff and the modern component patterns designers now expect are missing or half there. The plugin and community ecosystem has emptied out, which means fewer templates and fewer answers when something breaks.

XD was never the right tool for everyday creator jobs either. It isn't a photo editor, so thumbnails that need cutouts or relighting belong in Photoshop. It has no social templates, brand kit or scheduler, so Adobe Express or Canva covers social graphics better. And it doesn't publish a live site, so a portfolio or link-in-bio page needs another tool. There are no AI image features to weigh commercial-use terms for.

Pricing in practice

XD isn't sold as a standalone subscription anymore, and Adobe publishes no standalone price. Existing users download it through the Creative Cloud app. Access is reported to come with Creative Cloud Pro (formerly Creative Cloud All Apps), but Adobe doesn't state in writing which plan includes XD, so confirm with Adobe before you pay for anything because of XD.

Example (assumption: you would not otherwise use Creative Cloud): buying Creative Cloud Pro at US$69.99/mo (annual plan, billed monthly, as listed on Adobe's Photoshop plans page on Oct 8, 2026) just to keep XD costs about $840 a year. Figma's or Penpot's free plans are a cheaper place to rebuild your key screens.

Who should pick it (and who shouldn't)

Keep using it if you maintain an existing XD library, your team knows it, and you need to ship small edits while you plan a move. Export or rebuild your most important files now rather than when Adobe announces an end date.

Skip it if you're starting a project, need real-time co-editing, want a component system that keeps evolving, or need a tool that makes thumbnails, social graphics or a published site.

Alternatives worth comparing
