Why creators leave Figma.

Price is complaint number one, and it changed shape rather than went away: seat-based pricing means the moment a second person needs edit access, the bill jumps, and "just view the file" collaborators still cause plan friction. For a solo creator making thumbnails, that's a lot of platform for the money.

Complaint number two is that Figma is a product-design tool. It has no CMYK, no real print output, no raster editing worth the name, and no template shortcuts. If your work is a printed workbook, a photo composite or a fast Instagram carousel, you are using an interface tool to do a job it wasn't built for.

Complaint number three is dependency. Everything lives in Figma's cloud; offline access is limited, and after the Adobe acquisition attempt a lot of teams decided they wanted files they could hold. Open formats and local storage are now a real reason people move.

Should you actually switch?

For most creators, no. Figma's free tier covers solo work, and it's the strongest tool in the category — we score it 9.4. The switch is worth making when a specific mismatch shows up: you're paying for seats you barely use, you need print output, or you want files you can hold without a subscription.

The one migration we'd push people towards is Framer, and only when the end product is a website. Everything designed twice — once in Figma, once in a site builder — is time you're paying for twice.

What is the best free Figma alternative?
Penpot, comfortably. It's fully open source, free for unlimited files and collaborators, supports components and design tokens, and can be self-hosted so nobody can change the terms on you. Expect slower performance on very large files and far fewer plugins than Figma.
Can I import my Figma files into another tool?
Penpot imports .fig files with reasonable fidelity for layout and text; complex components, auto-layout edge cases and plugin-generated content usually need cleanup. Framer imports Figma frames via copy-paste. Affinity does not import .fig at all — you'd export SVG or PDF and rebuild.
Is there a Figma alternative I can buy once?
Affinity Designer. A one-time licence covers desktop and iPad, files stay local, and it handles vector, print and illustration better than Figma does. You give up real-time collaboration and component-driven UI work.
Is Figma still worth paying for in 2026?
For teams, yes — no alternative matches its collaboration, Dev Mode handoff and plugin ecosystem. For solo creators the free tier is usually enough, and the paid tiers are hard to justify unless you're sharing edit access.
