Can I use Adobe Express as a free alternative to Photoshop?

Yes, for lighter work. Adobe Express runs in a browser, has a usable free tier, and includes background removal and generative fill, so it covers everyday creator edits like thumbnails, social graphics and quick cleanups. It is not feature-equivalent: it won't do professional retouching, compositing or colour management, and it only reaches PSD content partially through Creative Cloud libraries. If you need real layers and masks without a subscription, Affinity by Canva is the better fit.

Can any of these open my PSD files?

Affinity by Canva imports and exports PSD with layers, masks and text largely intact; very complex smart-object and adjustment-heavy files can shift. Canva, Figma and the generative tools cannot open PSDs at all — you'd flatten to PNG first.

Is Affinity still a one-time purchase?

No. The one-time Affinity V2 licences are no longer sold. Since October 2025 the new Affinity by Canva app is free with a Canva account, with free updates; existing V2 licences still activate but get no future updates. The AI features need a paid Canva plan.

Should you actually switch?

If you do professional retouching, compositing, colour-critical print work, or you exchange layered files with other people who use Photoshop, stay. The alternatives close most of the gap but not that part of it, and fighting file compatibility costs more than the subscription.
