Why creators leave Adobe Photoshop.

If you do professional retouching, compositing, colour-critical print work, or you exchange layered files with other people who use Photoshop, stay. The alternatives close most of the gap but not that part of it, and fighting file compatibility costs more than the subscription.

If you need actual layers and masks without a subscription, buy Affinity Designer once instead of hunting for a free equivalent — the free desktop editors that match Photoshop's depth all come with a steep interface learning curve.
Can any of these open my PSD files?
Affinity Designer imports and exports PSD with layers, masks and text largely intact; very complex smart-object and adjustment-heavy files can shift. Canva, Figma and the generative tools cannot open PSDs at all — you'd flatten to PNG first.
Is Affinity really a one-time purchase?
Yes. You pay once per app for a perpetual licence covering desktop, and the software keeps working forever. Major version upgrades have historically been paid but discounted for existing owners, and there's no feature lockout if you skip one.
What replaces Photoshop for YouTube thumbnails?
