Should you actually switch?

Run the number before you move anything. Take your monthly subscription revenue, multiply by 0.10, and compare it to what beehiiv, Ghost or Kit would charge for your subscriber count. Under roughly $300–400 a month in paid revenue, Substack is usually the cheaper and simpler option and the recommendation network is worth real money. Above about $1,500 a month, staying is a deliberate choice to pay a five-figure annual fee for convenience.

The other trigger has nothing to do with money: needing to send different emails to different people. Segmentation, automated welcome sequences, and lapsed-subscriber win-backs are where Substack genuinely can't follow you, and no amount of scale-related patience fixes that. If both triggers are true, move — Stripe subscriptions transfer without your readers re-entering card details, which is the part people wrongly fear.
